Pest Control questions, answered
How do I know if I have termites?
Look for mud tubes on foundation walls or in crawlspaces, winged swarmers or their discarded wings near windows in spring, small piles of pellets below wood, blistered paint, or wood that sounds hollow. A professional inspection can confirm the type and extent of activity.
Is fumigation the only way to treat drywood termites?
No. Localized drywood infestations can sometimes be treated with spot treatments or heat. Fumigation is generally used for widespread or inaccessible infestations. A contractor should explain which options fit your situation.
How do mice get into my house?
Through small gaps around pipes, wires and vents, under garage doors, at damaged foundation vents, at the roofline and around utility lines. Mice can fit through very small openings. Sealing those entry points with durable materials is the most effective long-term fix.
Are rodent poisons safe to use inside?
Poison used indoors can leave rodents to die in walls, causing odors, and can endanger pets and children if not contained. Traps are generally preferred inside. If bait is used, it should be in tamper-resistant stations and used according to the label.
How should I clean up rodent droppings?
Don't sweep or vacuum dry droppings. Ventilate the area, wear gloves, wet the droppings and nesting material with a disinfectant, wipe them up and seal them in a bag for disposal. Heavily contaminated areas may need professional cleanup.
Why do ants keep coming back?
Ants return when food, water and entry points remain available, or when a spray kills foragers without reaching the colony. Baits that foragers carry back to the colony, combined with cleanup and sealing gaps, usually work better than repeated spraying.
What is integrated pest management?
Integrated pest management means identifying the pest, understanding why it's present, removing attractants, sealing entry points and using targeted treatments only where needed. It tends to be more effective and use less pesticide than routine spraying.
Are pest control treatments safe for pets?
Many treatments can be used safely around pets when applied according to the label and with the right precautions. Tell the technician about pets, keep them away from treated areas until dry or as directed, and ask about the specific products used.
Should I remove a wasp nest myself?
Small, new nests away from people can sometimes be handled carefully, but large nests, nests in walls or in the ground, and nests near doorways or play areas are best left to professionals. Yellowjackets can sting repeatedly when their nest is disturbed.
How often should I have a pest inspection?
For termites, periodic inspections are worthwhile where termites are common, and a termite inspection is standard when buying a home. For general pests, many homeowners call only when there's a problem; others use a seasonal or quarterly plan.
